JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - In a season that included many memorable moments and the most wins in school history, the Tabor College Baseball teams post season run came to a halt Friday in Junction City, Kan., where the Bluejays fell to Ottawa University, 9-5, at the KCAC conference tournament.
Tabor, which finished in a tie for second place and a game out of first place in the KCAC regular season standings, finished the 2010 season with a record 33-19, under the direction of second-year head coach Mark Standiford.
After a scoreless first inning by both teams, Ottawa turned a Tabor error into six runs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning to open up a 6-0 lead.
Tabor, however, would begin to chip away at the Braves lead beginning in the fourth inning as the Bluejays scored twice on RBI singles by juniors Tanner Stevenson (Wichita, Kan.) and Jake May (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to cut the lead to 6-2.
The Bluejays would inch even closer in the sixth inning on senior David Fuentes (Corona, Calif.) two-out pitch-hit RBI single to cut the Braves lead to 6-3. The rally would continue in the seventh inning for Tabor as freshman Nathan Rausch (Wichita, Kan.) hit a two-out home run to pull the Bluejays within one at 6-5.
Ottawa answered in the bottom half of the seventh inning with three runs to extend its lead to four at 9-5.
Tabor would have one last rally in them, however, as the Bluejays, who trailed by four, loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning before the Braves ended the threat and secured the win.
Tabor, which out-hit the Braves 14 to 11, couldn't seem to get the big hits when they needed them the most as the Bluejays stranded 14 runners on base for the game.
Six Bluejay batters recorded two hits in the game, led by Rausch who went 2-5 from the plate with two RBI's and two runs scored. Seniors Andrew Cook (Rockwall, Texas) and Paul Bridenbaugh (Peoria, Ariz.) combined for three runs scored as they each went 2-4 from the plate to help aid the Bluejays offensive attack.
Three Tabor pitchers combined to pitch eight innings allowing four earned runs on 11 hits while striking out six.
