Taylor Funk's home run was the difference in game 1

HILLSBORO, Kan. - The Tabor College Softball team swept the visiting Spires of the University of St. Mary in a double-header Thursday afternoon at the Hillsboro Sports Complex.


The victories move Tabor into a tie for fourth place in the KCAC standings, and extended its winning streak to three games.


Tabor (5-5 KCAC, 14-19 Overall) will play host to Friends University in a double-header Saturday, April 17, at the Hillsboro Sports Complex. Game one is set for 1 p.m.


In game one, Tabor used a strong defensive performance and mustard just enough offense to shut-out the Spires, 2-0.


Freshmen Taylor Funk (Wichita, Kan.) supplied the offense Tabor was looking for, as she broke a scoreless tie in the second inning on a solo home run to give the Bluejays the early lead. Funk would also provide the insurance run for the Bluejays. Her RBI double in the fourth inning scored freshman Roxanne Rodriguez (McAllen, Texas) and Tabor held on for the victory.


Rodriguez got the start and the shut-out for the Bluejays. She pitched seven innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out six.


In game two extra innings were needed as the Bluejays came on top in the end defeating the Spires 2-1 to complete the sweep.


Tied at one apiece heading into the ninth inning, freshman Jessika Guderyon (Houston, Texas) doubled to left field, scoring Funk from second base and earning Tabor the victory.


Guderyon led the Bluejays offensive attack as she went 2-4 from the plate with the game-winning RBI, while senior Aubrey Whitehorn (Duncanville, Texas) went 1-3 from the plate with an RBI.


Rodriguez was once again on the hill for the Bluejays. She pitched nine innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six.
