HILLSBORO, Kan. -
The Tabor College Men's Baseball Team gave Heart of America Athletic Conference
foe William Jewel College all it could handle before dropping two heart
breakers in the final innings Saturday afternoon in a contest played at
Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kan.
In game one each team would notch a run in the second inning
to tie the score at one apiece before the Cardinals scored two runs in the top
of the seventh to earn the 3-1 victory.
Despite earning the loss the Bluejays got a strong pitching
performance from sophomore Jonathan Murray (Wichita, Kan.) who pitched six and
a third innings allowing just one earned run on eight hits while striking out
two.
Offensively Tabor left nine men on base while recording
eight hits in the game. Senior Dustin Dick (Hutchinson, Kan.) led the Bluejays
attack as he went 3-4 from the plate with Tabor's only RBI of the game.
In game two seven innings was not enough as both teams
traded leads back and fourth before the Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of
the eighth to earn the 7-5 victory.
Tabor built an early 1-0, lead after the first before William
Jewel would regain the lead at 2-1, after two innings of play. The Bluejays
would regain the lead at 3-2, after three and extend the lead to 4-2 after
adding a run in the bottom of the fifth.
However William Jewel would answer back with two runs in the
top of the sixth inning to tie the score at four apiece, and take the lead back
with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
With their backs against the walls Tabor would push the game
tying run through in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra
innings. The Cardinals would answer back quickly with a two run eighth inning
to earn the victory and the two game sweep.
Tabor was led offensively by seniors Andrew Cook (Rockwall,
Texas) and Tyson Kendrick (Arkansas City, Kan.) as both players went 3-4 from
the plate with two RBI's each. Dick also chipped in offensively as he went 1-2
from the plate with three runs scored.
Freshman Will Wood (Combine, Texas) got the start for the
Bluejays and pitched five and two-thirds innings allowing four earned runs on
five hits while striking out two.
Tabor (2-4 Overall) will host Clarke College (Dubuque, Iowa)
in a double-header at the West Urban Sports Baseball Complex in Wichita, Kan.
Monday March 1, with game one set for 1 p.m.
