Clay Shewey netted 15 points off the bench for the Bluejays

Hillsboro, Kan. - After starting out 3-0 on the road in conference play the Tabor College Men's Basketball team suffered its first road conference loss of the season Thursday night in Winfield, Kan., falling to Southwestern in overtime, 76-71.


Tabor trailed by two at 34-32 at the end of a first half that saw both teams trade leads. In the second half Tabor would begin to open up a lead on the strength of three three-pointers by freshman Clay Shewey (Hillsboro, Kan.) only to see the Moundbuilders reclaim the lead late by two with just under 10 seconds to play.


After a quick foul, Southwestern missed the first but made the second free throw to extend the lead to three at 67-64 with just under five seconds to play. But after a quick entry pass, sophomore Cody Arnold (Leon, Kan.)split two defenders just past half court and swished a deep three as the buzzer sounded to give the Bluejays life and send the game into overtime.


In the extra session it Southwestern claimed the tip and control of the game, outscoring Tabor, 9-4, to secure the victory.


Tabor was led offensively by junior Damon Dechant (Kit Carson, Colo.) with 17 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds, while Shewey came off the bench to rack up 15 points on five of seven shooting from behind the arc.


Freshman Lawson Kingsley (Sedgwick, Kan.) chipped in with nine points while senior Dan Hann (Phoenix, Ariz.) added eight points, and freshman Ryan Chippeaux (Wichita, Kan.) six points to go along with seven rebounds.


Tabor (3-4 KCAC 6-10 Overall) will travel to Leavenworth, Kan., to play the University of St. Mary Saturday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m.
