Ashley Cohlmia was named KCAC Player of the Year

Hillsboro, Kan. - Coming off the heels of its seventh KCAC regular season title in the past eleven years, the Tabor College Volleyball team was honored this past week as five Bluejays were named to the All-KCAC Teams including two Player of the Year selections, three First Team All-KCAC selections, and two Second Team All-KCAC selections.

Senior Ashley Cohlmia (Wichita, Kan.) and sophomore Mandi Phillips (Halstead, Kan.) were both named KCAC Player's of the Year and earned First Team All-KCAC selections. Cohlmia was named KCAC Volleyball Player of the year, and Phillips was named KCAC Setter of the Year.

Sophomore Tina Frick (Durham, Kan.) also earned First Team All-KCAC honors, while senior Cary Kroeker (Henderson, Neb.) and sophomore Gina Hullet (Abilene, Kan.) took home Second Team All-KCAC honors.

Cohlmia did a little bit of everything for the Bluejays this season. She was second on the team in kills with 296 with average of 2.9 per-game, ranking her 6th in the KCAC. She was third on the team in hitting percentage at .217, ranking her 12th in the KCAC. And she was first on the team in both services aces, with 42, and digs, with 334, ranking her second and 13th in the KCAC. Cohlmia was also named KCAC Hitter of the Week during the campaign.

"I am so excited to see Ashley receive Player of the Year," said Head Coach Amy Ratzlaff. "She has worked hard for the award and is truly an all-around player who has contributed to a lot of wins. Her contribution to the team in every statistical category was a big part of our success. Ashley's serve receive was a big part of our game as well as her digs and attacks. The ‘fear factor' that her serves brought will also be missed."

Phillips led the KCAC in both assists, with 1139, and assists per-game, with an average of 10.8, as she helped lead the way for the Bluejays hitters. She was fourth on the team in services aces with 25, ranking her tied for 18th in the KCAC, and was third on the team in digs, with 198.

Phillips also won an unprecedented six KCAC Setter of the Week awards and three KCAC Volleyball Player of the Week awards this season.

"Mandi certainly deserved the Setter of the Year award," said Ratzlaff. "Her accomplishments this season have been amazing. She was Setter of the Week six times this season and ended the season at 7th in the nation in assists per game. Not only does she bring skill, but her ability to run our offense smoothly was a gift. We are thrilled to know she is returning next year with new expectations and goals."

Frick, a transfer from Wichita State, provided a huge lift to the 2009 Bluejays. She led the team in kills with 356, an average of 3.4 per game, ranking her fourth and third, respectively, in the KCAC. She also led the Bluejays in hitting percentage, at .298, ranking her second in the KCAC, and was tied for second on the team in service aces with 30. She also was first on the team in total blocks, with 66, ranking her 16th in the KCAC.

Frick also won three KCAC Hitter of the Week awards as well as a KCAC Volleyball Player of the Week honor during the season.

"Tina was a huge part of our success this year and a big reason why our squad took a step forward in the conference," said Ratzlaff. "Her presence on the court grew and grew as the season progressed until she was a main force for us by mid-season. Her athleticism and power continued to impress me to the very end of season, and I am already anticipating her contributions next season."

Hullet was third on the team in kills with 204, ranking her 19th in the KCAC, and second on the team in hitting percentage, at .244, ranking her 10th in the KCAC. She also was third on the team in service aces with 27, ranking her 16th in the KCAC, and was named KCAC Hitter of the Week during the campaign.

"It was so good to see Gina step forward this year," said Ratzlaff. "She is very gifted athletic and a great competitor, and this year she used those gifts to get the job done. "Gina is the type of player who will always come up with big plays at big moments. She is the type of player that you want on your court in tight moments, and I am excited to see what her career brings in the years to come."

Kroeker was fourth on the team in kills with 174, good for a 1.64 average per-game. She was also second on the team in assists with 34, while chipping in with 51 digs and 31 total blocks on defense.

"This year Carly really stepped up to the plate and turned from a role player to a key player," said Ratzlaff. "There were many matches that Carly's offense kept us performing and ensured a win and I believe that is certainly a sign of an All-Conference player. Carly has helped to keep us strong on the court and off the court as well."
