Hillsboro, Kan. - Needing just one win in its last two regular season games to wrap up the regular season KCAC title, The Tabor College Volleyball team left nothing to chance as the Bluejays defeated Ottawa University in three games (25-23, 25-20, 32-3-0) Tuesday night in Hillsboro, Kan., and in the process won the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title.


The championship is the seventh in the past 11th years for Coach Amy Ratzlaff and her Bluejays, whofinished in fourth place last year in the KCAC.


The win was also bittersweet for the Bluejays, who avenged one of only two conference losses this season in the process.


Despite the three game sweep, the Braves would not go quietly. Tabor won game one by two points, game two by five points, and game three needed extra play before Tabor took it and the match by two, 32-30.


Sophomore Tina Frick (Durham, Kan.) and senior Ashley Cohlmia (Wichita, Kan.) led the charge offensively for the Bluejays as they racked up 17 and 16 kills apiece.


Sophomore setter Mandi Phillips (Halstead, Kan.) dished out 46 assists with zero errors on the night, while senior Carly Kroeker (Henderson, Neb.) and sophomore Gina Hullet (Abilene, Kan.) combined for 14 kills to help aid the Bluejays attack.


Defensively Cohlmia and Hullet led the way for the Bluejays with 11 and eight digs respectively, while five Bluejays combined for eight blocks up-front.


Tabor (15-2 KCAC, 18-10 Overall) will finish out regular season play at against the University of St. Mary Thursday Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.


With the KCAC title, the Bluejays will be the No. 1 seed and have home court advantage in next week's KCAC Volleyball Tournament, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the 2009 NAIA National Volleyball Championship.
