Football - Mon, Oct 26, 2009

In a thrilling rivalry match-up The Tabor Football team lost a heartbreaker to Bethel College in triple overtime by the final score of 32-29.

Tabor opened up the game with a strong offense performance. Several impressive scrambles by sophomore quarterback Marc Amos (Lakewood, Colo.) led to first downs, as well as a solid running game from sophomore running back Derek Washington (Spanish Camp, Texas.) who had 73 rushing yards on the day, including a 27 yard run in the first quarter.

The Bluejays traded scores with the Threshers throughout the game, going into the fourth quarter down by seven points. Bethel scored on their opening drive of the quarter, but two touchdown receptions by freshman Chris Roddy (Pflugerville, Texas.) tied the game.

The defense made a strong stand in the fourth quarter as Bethel attempted to drive down the field with the game tied and just over two minutes to go. Their drive was stopped short when freshman defensive end Chris Sanborn (Pinellas Park, Fla.) intercepted a pass, sending the game into overtime.

Tabor held the Threshers in the first two overtime periods, as Bethel missed two field goals, however the Jays offense fumbled on both their possessions, leading to a third overtime where Bethel the game winning field goal.

Although the team lost, the players looked much improved and very inspired throughout the entire game.

Amos had a great passing game, racking up 310 total passing yards and three touchdowns through the air. Amos' receivers did a good job of getting open as well, particularly Roddy who had 120 yards receiving and pulled in all three of Amos' passing touchdowns.

The defense looked strong as well. The defensive line applied pressure all day long, sacking the quarterback three times, two sacks coming from junior defensive end Clark Wozich (Cottage Grove, Ore.). Lapses in coverage and mental mistakes were the main causes of Bethel's touchdowns in the game.

Tabor (0-6 KCAC, 0-7 Overall) hosts McPherson College Saturday Oct. 31, at 1:30 p.m. at Joel H. Wiens Stadium.
