Hillsboro, Kan. - Winning on the road is never easy, but that's exactly what the Tabor College Men's Basketball Team accomplished Tuesday night in Crete, Neb. defeating Doane College, 67-59.
Assistant Coach Anthony Monson led the Bluejays again in place of Head Coach Micah Ratzlaff, who is still recovering from an injured back. The win was the third straight for the Bluejays and their first win away from the friendly confines of Hillsboro, Kan.
"Winning on the road is always hard especially against a quality team like Doane," said Monson. "Our guys really stepped up to the challenge, and played extremely hard while maintaining their focus in a very hostile environment."
Tabor never trailed in the game as senior Jared Hett (Marion, Kan.) knocked down a three to get the Bluejays off to a quick start. Tabor continued to build on its lead, but could never pull away as foul trouble plagued the Bluejays big men all night.
Tabor was led offensively by sophomore Kyle de Blonk (Emporia, Kan.) with 16 points off the bench. Senior Aaron Whitelaw (Milwaukee, Wis.) added 15 points while junior Kyle Kroeker (Hillsboro, Kan.) added eight points, including two three's in the first half.
Defensively the Bluejays were able to force Doane into 21 turnovers while holding the Tigers to 35 percent shooting from the field.
"I felt the defensive intensity was there throughout the night," said Monson. "We had a game plan for how we wanted to defend them and the guys worked extremely hard to execute it. Anytime you hold a team under 60 points on the road you're going to be in the game."
Tabor will play in the Sterling College Classic at 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday against Lindenwood College, and College of the Ozarks.
