Hillsboro, Kan. – The Tabor College women's basketball team finished the week strong with a 1-1 record in conference play and in the process snapped an eight-game losing streak. Thursday the Lady Jays fell just short against Ottawa University before handling Bethany College for the second straight time this season on Saturday.

 

Against Ottawa, Tabor could not hang onto a slim, halftime lead as the Lady Jays fell to the Braves by eight at 57-49, Thursday night in Hillsboro, Kan.

 

A back-and-fourth first half would see the Lady Jays lead by as many as five in the period at 20-15 with 7:19 left to play. Despite a mini run by Ottawa, the Lady Jays still took a one-point advantage into halftime at 28-27.

 

Ottawa would score the first points of the second half and not look back as the Braves never trailed in the half. A 24-6 run by the Braves to start the half would give Ottawa its largest lead of the night at 51-34 as, Tabor's offensive attack went cold for most of the half. Despite the deficit the Lady Jays would rally and close within single digits with just over two minutes to play. The rally would fall short as Ottawa held on for the victory.

 

Junior Katlyn Mary was the only Lady Jay to reach double figures on the night as she finished with 14 points on 4-10 shooting from the field and 3-4 shooting from behind the arc. Junior Tynan Honn and sophomore Hannah Paust each added seven points apiece, while juniors Molly Dick and My-Chal Duncan chipped in with six points.

 

Tabor finished the game shooting 39 percent from the field and 31 percent from behind the arc, while dishing out 10 assists to 24 turnovers for the game. The Lady Jays also lost the the battle on the glass by nine at 31-40. Duncan led Tabor on the glass with a game-high eight rebounds.

 

Against Bethany, Tabor executed an offensive and defensive game plan to perfection as they rolled past the Bethany College Swedes by the score  62-37, Saturday night in Hillsboro, Kan. The 25-point victory was Tabor's largest of the season as the Lady Jays completed the two game sweep of the Swedes on the year.

 

Things could not have started better for Tabor in the first half as they used a 21-5 run over the first 10 minutes of play to quickly build a 16 point advantage. The lead would continue to grow to as many as 20 points in the first half as Tabor held the Swedes in single digits until the 5:23 of the half.

 

Tabor's strong play on both ends of the floor helped maintain its 20-point advantage heading into the halftime break at 34-14.

 

The Lady Jays would continue to keep their foot on the gas in the second half as they quickly extend the lead up to 26 at 45-19 with 13:53 left to play in the game. Tabor continued to hold a 20-plus point advantage for the rest of the game, cruising to its second conference victory of the season.

 

Nine Lady Jays scored in the game led by Mary with 12 points and junior Whitney Frise with 11 points. Tabor also got offensive help from Honn with nine points, Paust with seven points, and Duncan with eight points.

 

Tabor finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field and 28 percent from behind the arc, while dishing out 14 assists to 18 turnovers for the game. The Lady Jays also won the battle on the glass by six at 33-27. Duncan led Tabor on the glass with a game-high five rebounds.

 

Defensively, Tabor suffocated the Swedes all night long holding Bethany to 30 percent shooting from the field and just 18 percent shooting from behind the arc. The Lady Jays also totaled 12 steals on the night while forcing Bethany into 26 turnovers for the game.

 

Tabor (2-12 KCAC, 4-20 Overall) will travel to North Newton, Kan. Thursday Feb. 9, to take on rival Bethel College at 6 p.m.
