Hillsboro, Kan. – For the fourth consecutive week the Tabor College men's basketball team earned a split in KCAC play to even their conference recorded to 6-6 and move into a tie for fourth place in the KCAC standings.
On Thursday the Bluejays fell on the road to nationally ranked McPherson College before knocking off Kansas Wesleyan University for the second time this season on Saturday in Salina, Kan.
Against McPherson, things could not have gone worse for Tabor as the Bluejays endured their worst shooting performance of the season before falling to the host Bulldogs by the score of 76-48.
Tabor finished the game shooting 24 percent from the field (16-66) and 12 percent from behind the arc knocking down 2-15 attempts from long distance. The same could not be said for the Bulldogs who knocked down nine, first-half three-point attempts on their way to shooting 50 percent from behind the arc for the game.
McPherson, who on the season averages just over five made three-point fields per game, used its strong first-half shooting performance to put away Tabor early as they took a 24-point lead into the halftime break at 50-26. The Bulldogs finished the first half shooting 48 percent from the field and a sizzling 60 percent from behind the arc. The Bluejays finished the half shooting 35 percent from the field and just 11 percent from long distance.
Junior Ryan Chippeaux would be the only Bluejay to shoot 50 percent from the field and reach double figures on the night with 13 points on 4-8 shooting. Chippeaux, along with fellow junior Michael Janzen, each grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as Tabor lost the battle on the boards by one at 49-48. Turnovers also plagued the Bluejays as they committed 15 on the night to 12 assists. Senior Kyle Wallace led Tabor with a game-high seven assists.
Against Kansas Wesleyan University, the Bluejays shook off a poor first-half of play to rally past the Coyotes on the road by the score of 87-75.
In the first half Tabor's offensive and defensive struggles seem to carry over from Thursday night as Kansas Wesleyan, who is still in search of its first KCAC win, built a six-point lead heading into the halftime break at 34-28.
Tabor finished the half shooting 35 percent from the field and 21 percent from long distance knocking down 4-19 attempts from behind the arc.
In the second half the Bluejays would find their offensive rhythm and explode for 59 points to rally past the Coyotes and earn the 12-point victory. A 14-2 run to start the half got the Tabor offense jump started, as the Bluejays continually attack the basket both off the dribble and on the block. Tabor also found the mark from long range knocking down 5-7 attempts from three (71 Percent) while shooting a scorching 74 percent from the field in the half.
Chippeaux finished the night with a monster double-double scoring a game-high 21 points on 10-12 shooting from the field to go along with 15 rebounds. Five other Bluejays reached double figures in the game led by junior Lawson Kingsley with 14 points, Wallace and senior Joe Penn with 11 points, and Janzen along with senior Cody Arnold with 10 points apiece.
Tabor finished the game shooting 54 percent from the field and 34 percent from behind the arc, while dishing out 19 assists to 12 turnovers for the game. The Bluejays also won the battle on the glass by five at 32-27.
Tabor (6-6 KCAC, 10-13 Overall) will return home to host Ottawa University Thursday Feb. 2 in Hillsboro, Kan. The junior varsity game is set for 4 p.m. with the varsity game to follow at 8 p.m.
