Hillsboro, Kan. – With the second half of KCAC play under way the Tabor College women's basketball team's bid to avenge to early season losses came up short this past week. Thursday the Lady Jays fell on the road to McPherson College before dropping its second game of the week on the road to Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kan.

 

Against McPherson, Tabor let a late, first-half lead slip away and could not recover as the Lady Jays fell to the Bulldogs by the score of 64-69.

 

A back-and-fourth first half saw the Lady Jays use a 10-2 run at the midway point of the first half to help erase a six-point deficit and take a 22-16 lead with 5:17 left to play the half. The six-point lead would be Tabor's largest of the night.

 

McPherson would close the half on a 17-2 run to quick regain the lead and take a nine-point advantage into the break at 33-24.

 

The Bulldogs would continue to keep their foot on the gas in the second half extending their lead to as many as 20 before earning the 15-point victory.

 

Junior Katlyn Mary led all scorers in the game with 23 points on 9-15 shooting from the field and 5-7 shooting from behind the arc. Sophomore Hannah Paust was the only other Lady Jay to reach double figures on the night as she finished with 11 points on 5-9 shooting from the field.

 

Rebounding and turnovers plagued Tabor as the Lady Jays lost the battle on the glass by 14 at 41-27, while committing 30 turnovers in the game. Junior My-Chal Duncan led the Lady Jays on the glass with a game-high nine rebounds. The Lady Jays finished the night with 11 assists, while shooting 49 percent from the field and 39 percent from behind the arc on the night.

 

Against Kansas Wesleyan, the Lady Jays were the victims of a host shooting night from behind the arc as they fell to the Coyotes by the score of 70-44.

 

They Coyotes shot a blistering 78 percent from behind the arc in the first half knocking down 7-9 attempts from the three to help build a 19-point lead heading into the break at 39-20. Tabor did not enjoy the same shooting success in the first half as the Lady Jays shot just 24 percent from the field.

 

Tabor would continue to battle in the second but could not overcome the first half deficit as Wesleyan earned its eighth KCAC victory of the season.

 

Mary and Paust led the Lady Jays offensive attack with 13 points respectively, while junior Whitney Frise added nine points knocking down 3-6 attempts from behind the arc.

 

Tabor finished the game shooting 26 percent from the field and 32 percent from behind the arc while dishing out eight assists to 15 turnovers on the night. Wesleyan continued its impressive shooting   as they shot 57 percent from the field and 53 percent from behind the arc. The Coyotes also controlled the play down low outscoring the Lady Jays in the paint by 20, at 26-6. Tabor did force the Coyotes into 20 turnovers on the night, but lost the battle on the glass by 13 at 37-24.

 

Tabor (1-11 KCAC, 3-19 Overall) will return home to host Ottawa University Thursday Feb. 2 in Hillsboro, Kan. The junior varsity game is set for 2 p.m. with the varsity game to follow at 6 p.m.
